The following contribution is of a friend of mine whose name is Mellisa Trouyet Camil. She is part of the Dove Self-Esteem Fund.
Did you know that...
Only two percent of thousands of women from 10 countries around the
world consider themselves beautiful?
Looking at fashion magazines for just three minutes lowers the self-
esteem of over 80% of women?
6 out of 10 teenage girls think they’d be happier if they were thinner?
While only 19% of teenage girls are “overweight”, 67% think they need
to “loose weight”?
The body fat of models and actresses portrayed in the media is at
least 10% less than that of healthy women?
Most women agree that there is more pressure today to “look a certain
way” than there was in our parents' generation?
The incidence of eating disorders is increasing at an alarming rate?
When women are asked what they fear most in life, most will cite the
possibility of gaining weight?
Young people are exposed to an average of 1000 advertisements a day?
The majority of the ads we see have been somehow altered using
retouching technology to erase and minimize imperfections?
What is the effect of living in a global society that consistently
bombards us with narrow definitions of what it means to be beautiful? The effect
of these trends is that too many girls develop low self-esteem from
hang ups about looks and consequently fail to reach their full
potential in later life.
That is why we created the Dove Self-Esteem Fund as an agent of
change to educate and inspire girls on a wider definition of beauty.
Committed to reaching 5 million young women by the end of 2010, the
Dove Self-Esteem Fund invites you to play a role in supporting and
promoting a wider definition of beauty. Please visit:

well I really agree with this article, I mean how many women feel so bad when we see a movie or just a magazine which stars are women who look like dolls, like they are perfect because her body looks gorgeous.
Most of these women who are "hotties" are sick, and they care their body because they live of it, but I think that the Tv shouln't be so hard, some tv programs which names I don't remember are just dedicated to talk about these models and to let us know how perfect they are and the diets they take, in some ways it's despective because, I mean they must know that most of the women would love to have that perfect body or that beautiful face but it's unreal.
Even if they look so perfect, doesnt mean that they are happy with the way they are, or sometimes they may be gorgeous outside but inside they could be the most ugly people. I think we should avoid feeling bad to see perfect bodies and perfect lifes, we should be proud of what we got, even if we don't look like a super model we all are beautuful, inside or outside, and I think that the most important thing is to be beautiful inside because the outside anytime will end and we will have to live with the person who we are inside..
Hi George:
hey i like this article...!!!
i´m in those percents!!!
i think that its horibble and really i cant believe that this is real!, and i have a question, who tell that if you´re thin you´re really beautiful???
there are cultures that the women are fat and they think that they´re really beautiful and sexies!, but nowadays the big problem is that famous people or the people that work on television are thin and they promote the anorexia and bulimia and that is horrible.
and also i hate the people that always tell you that you´re fat and the women that tell her friends that if they want to be in their group they need to be thin, and also their comments and when they you that you´re a fat woman....
but i love to be a fat woman, and i don´t care what they think about my body and all the things they said.
Hi! again =D
I think eating disorders are a problem that not only damage girls but also boys. The media has a huge fault of this, because it makes people to think the are not beautiful just because they don't look like celebrities and models that are really skinny.
Actually I saw a program about the way that loosing and gaining weight in short periods of time affects your life, becuase it reduces the years you have left to live. There were celebrities that just have 20 years left! I think this is really bad because they are suppoused to be an example to teenagers. Another example of this is a plus size model (I don't remember her name) that was really famous because of her size and because she made high fashion runways but the pressure that runways means to all models made her lose weight because she didn't fit on the high fashion world with her healthy size.
sad sad sad sad but its nothing else but the truth.
I wrote an essay that has something to do with it....it's about how tv, radio, magazines, etc manipulates people, we are just puppets and we don't realise, we can not say that we are free of it and we are like kind of uniques.
IN the society it is thought that being extremely thin is the way that a beautiful women must be. So we must look unhealthy to have the aprobment of them. I think that is just silly, we all are beautiful in a way and we shouldn't be paying attention to the opinion of just some ignorants.
Pff, i don't know i just sometimes get mad when I talk about this!
We need to learn how to make our own opinion and do not be like how other people want us to be.
