People in most countries around the world are happier these days, according to newly released data from the World Values Survey based at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
Data from representative national surveys conducted from 1981 to 2007 show the happiness index rose in an overwhelming majority of nations studied.
"It's a surprising finding," said U-M political scientist Ronald Inglehart, who directs the World Values Surveys and is the lead author of an article on the topic to be published in the July 2008 issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. "It's widely believed that it's almost impossible to raise an entire country's happiness level."
The 2007 wave of the surveys also provides a ranking of 97 nations containing 90 percent of the world's population. The results indicate that Denmark is the happiest nation in the world and Zimbabwe the unhappiest. The United States ranks 16th on the list, immediately after New Zealand.
During the past 26 years, the World Values Surveys have asked more than 350,000 people how happy they are, using the same two questions.
"Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy?" And, "All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?"
Combining responses to these two questions, Inglehart and colleagues constructed an index of subjective well-being that reflects both happiness and general life satisfaction.
In the 52 countries for which a substantial time series is available (covering 17 years on average), this index rose in 40 countries and fell in only 12. The average percentage of people who said they were "very happy" increased by almost seven points.
"Most earlier research has suggested that happiness levels are stable," Inglehart said. "Important events like winning the lottery or learning you have cancer can lead to short-term changes, but in the long run most previous research suggests that people and nations are stuck on a 'hedonic treadmill.' The belief has been that no matter what happens or what we do, basic happiness levels are stable and don't really change."
The new findings from the World Values Surveys not only show that during the past 25 years, happiness has in fact risen substantially in most countries. Fully as important as the fact that happiness rose is the reason why. In recent decades, low-income countries such as India and China have experienced unprecedented rates of economic growth, dozens of medium-income countries have democratized and there has been a sharp rise of gender equality and tolerance of ethnic minorities and gays and lesbians in developed societies.
Economic growth, democratization and rising social tolerance have all contributed to rising happiness, with democratization and rising tolerance having even more impact than economic growth. All of these changes have contributed to providing people with a wider range of choice in how to live their lives---which is a key factor in happiness.
The people of rich countries tend to be happier than those of poor countries, but even controlling for economic factors, certain types of societies are much happier than others.
"The results clearly show that the happiest societies are those that allow people the freedom to choose how to live their lives," Inglehart said.
As an example, Inglehart points to the tolerant social norms and democratic political systems in Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Canada all of which rank among the 10 happiest countries in the world.
"The events of the past 25 years have brought a growing sense of freedom that seems to be even more important than economic development in contributing to rising happiness," Inglehart said. "Moreover, the most effective way to maximize happiness seems to change with rising levels of economic development. In subsistence-level societies, happiness is closely linked with in-group solidarity, religiosity and national pride. At higher levels of economic security, free choice has the largest impact on happiness."
He also notes that the largest recent increases on the subjective well-being index, measuring both happiness and life-satisfaction, occurred in the Ukraine, followed by Moldova, Slovenia, Nigeria, Turkey and Russia.
"While most ex-communist countries show low levels of happiness, many of them show large recent increases in subjective well-being," Inglehart said. "The collapse of communism was generally followed by a sharp decline in well-being, which tended to rise again with economic recovery."
I believe that every country has his own natural beauties and in our country we have of everything, beaches, mountains, cold places, warm.
Also we possess a great diversity of flora and fauna that other persons come here only to knowing them.
Our culture that also is very diverse, and very colouring, I feel proud to live in Mexico, with regard to this on that I have just commented;
On the other hand (or side) I disgust like are many Mexicans because they don´t care their contry, only they selves and their confort.

I think... you are happy if you do that, don´t have importance if you live in Mexico, Canada, Spain, etc... You do your life and you choice the kind of life that you want, and about the countries... the country more happy is the country with much money?, the country with with more crazy people?.. Well I think that you are happy if you really want and you can do people happy if you are.
The other day I listened in radio program a conversation with two persons how said that you never could be happy, because the persons based their happiness in the money and their want more and more, and if they listen other people who have much money than theirs, they think that could be the persons happiers in the world with the money and that it´s a bad feeling.

Well I`m going to tell you something about the text "Are you really happy living in Mexico" well I think that the things that the text say are imposible you can`t have a qualification of the happy people that live in a country like Mexico or another countries that mencioned on the text because I think that the happiness of the people it can`t be quantitative becuase I think that the happiness is an abstract think because you can feel but you can explain that it`s like and absolut word.
That are the things that I considered of the text I another think that I considered it`s that the study realiced like the text say is absurd because that number expecifiqued on the text it`s so low because all the people that I know all the time are geting a laugh and I think that the people are happiness and I think that it was the really happy.

I'm happy to live in Mexico, but one of the problems is the insecurity, and also the pollution.
I like Mexico because it's a is a very beautiful place, the weather it's so unpredictable one days rain, other are sunny. It's a really exciting city, the people are very interesting. Anyone come from all over the world, Mexico is a very cosmopolitan city.
The buildongs are very fantastic! Lots of them are historical and famous, and there are wonderful.

For example; the level economic of the population , the quality of life that can have, social, economics and cultural factors.

Well, in my opinion this text shows important facts that are important to rise the happiness of the population who lives in one country, the most imortant for me are the freedom to live like you want, don't forgiving the responsability of each one to have respect for the others kinds of thinking and acting, it's certanly that another important element to rise the happiness is the economic level of the population, like the estadistics results shows the most rich people of the country have a high level of happiness otherwise the poor people in the country have a low level of happiness, but I'm happy to live in Mexico out of the problems of unsecurity and corruption who makes more problems to the comunity, yesterday I was watching on a TV program one person who proposes to create a civil asociation that it will score the activities of the Politician people to male sure that they are doing her work propperly, I think that is a fantastic idea because one of the problems in Mexico is that the goverment don't put correct punishments to the bad people, well, I think we can make those changes that our country needs but we need really change our mind and fill it of culture then those people with culture will have concience of his acts and finally those persons make the change.

I think that my country is very beautiful, but it has things that is very dangerous, for example the delinquency and the pollution they are most do danger in the country. I belive that the people should help their country for it be much better. I like my coutry and I want that it be good, so I happily with my country, because it has the culture, tradition and the most food.
I like to live in Mexico city because is a beautiful place in the world. We can offer to the tourist many wonderful an exiting places like Xochimilco with the trajineras, Teotihuacan with the impresionant piramides, in Tlatelolco we can see the Plaza de las 3 Culturas, in the palace of Bellas Artes we enjoy the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico and exhibitions of many interesant people, in the downtown we can find the Catedral, the Templo Mayor and the Palacio Nacional. During the September¨s month we enjoy the ilumination with the imagen of the heroes of the independence.
Mexico city has delicios gatronomy, the people is friendly like no other places.

I think that Mexico its a Great Country in all the ways.
We have a great variety of fruits all the time, we have all the kinds of weather , beatifull beaches , a beatiful history , we have identity , the land of the the legendary mariachi, world-famous tequila and awe-inspiring pyramids.
But. also have the Dark side , we are over populated we need more green areas and the crime and violence are the number one problems in my opinion ,is battling a new image that has been crafted recently by drug-traffickers who have left 3,148 people dead this year and kidnappers whose contempt for human life drew thousands and thousands of people to the streets demanding a stop to the violence.
The authorities have been responsible for this violence because, even inside government, there are drug traffickers who even get protection.
It's very sad to see what is happening it's something that hasn't been seen before.
So please report all crimes in the streets or houses or whatever you stay in the moment of the crime

Fortunatly, I think, We live in the most beautiful country and why not be happy?, our culture have a beautiful history, and are many places for visiting in our free time, perhaps museums, or teathers, mmm arqueologics places etc, and the best of the best obiusly is the food, Why? We have a lot of fruits, vegetables, meat and all is fresh, well maybe it isn´t always.
But I think, the problem is the terrible trafic in the streets and the mayority of the people put stress because that, and other big problem is the job. in Mexico the mayority of the people have a job but the money is not enoft and other people don´t have any job.
We need enjoy our country and meet our culture.

I'm happy to living here, because the weather here it's cool, in this country are beautifull landmark, people here are open minded, are funny and kind.
I think that this could be a perfect place to live in, but, people is scared because of the violence and the insecurity have, maybe that's why them prefer going abroad to live.
A lot of people think that they can't even come to travel by holidays because they don't feel safe.
Here are beautiful places to visite and foreigners are happy, because think that the things here are cheaper than in their countries, most of the teenager love to spend holidays in mexican beaches, they arrive home loving tequila, mezcal and all mexican alcohol, they get sick when eat our traditional dishes but is a great experience for them.
We should fight to save our country and help him showing our best side to be the best.

The difference is that citizens elect the form in which they want to live and have rights and guarantees that unhappy country. Certainly a developed country have higher per capita factor that determines the felecidad addition to the free choice of a life free of prejudice.

Actually, I didn't really like to live in Mexico because it's an insecure country and when you walk by the streets you cant´t enjoy calmness because you are only thinking about taking care of yourself.

So in my opinion, i love my country, i knon that nowadays we are living with a lot of violence, unemployment, political factors and the most important the quality of life that almost all the mexican people live in this times.
But i consider that Mexico is a big country the people are very happy with our customs, traditions, parties, and living with ours families, maybe the family is the biggest support that we can have.
I enjoy all the states, that we have, because in which one the people have differents ways to live and think.
I love my country because we have all the natural diversity like a mountains, natural rivers, forests, jungles, woods, beaches, etc,
We have the best flag in the world, our National Hymn is one of the most wonderful in the world too, our history is very interesant and i believe that we have all that we need.

And the statistics were really interesting because I could know what country is the most happy in the world, and also the most unhappy.

It's true, our country has a lot of natural beauties, like jungles, beaches, lakes, rivers, mountains, beautiful landscapes, weather!!! it's something taht foreigs love about our country because is cooler that other coauntries.
Our history is other interesting topic and a tresure that belong to us!! I's very sad that foreigns want to know about our past, visited more our museums and know more about our culture than us! :S
I know that the resouces are being exploted, that political and economic issues are deplorable, and our goverment sucks haha but the power it's in the people, if we want a better place for living, security and justice, it's in our hands accomplish. If we inform us about our country, we would have the wepons to form a better country. We have opur family, friend and people to be happy, we don't have to be sacare about life, just enjoy y make a better place, make a diffence.
My country it's not perfect, it's beautiful and has a big potential, only we have to explote it!!

WELL, I´m really happy in Mexico because here we have so much culture, traditions, the mexican food is really good, the nature is exquisite.
But I have a dream, some day, I would like to live in other country like canada or Uk; becuase I would like to learn about other ideologys. this is amazing!!!!.
but, some problem ti go abroad, would be that I will miss you my family.
The countries that in these moments are happiest i guees that they had a good comuinity while that other comiunity haven´t it can´t de happy, many situations produced facts with thwm the peolple change your life or your coustums, many activities to, in these days the things are wrong for example in years ago didn´t exist a lot of people living in streets or when you went with your family or friends at nights it wasn´t a problem because the time didn´t matter and now these sitution is a big problem, after the ten o´clok is very dangerous that you walk or take a taxi in wherever place,so, the peolple prefer to stay at home and don´t exposed, these facts i think that it´s producing in the countries be unhappy and it´s fabolous when you findf a country happy, i imagine that this city try to all people same and take care in all the that her use, with the wich gouberment that it´s the most important in this problem, realize in the country an armony and create a coustum in that the things are realized by them the better of they can incluyed help the other persons. it could be a goos advice.

I am very happy living in a country like México, because this is a beautiful place.
It is a place with a lot of culture and kind people, here we have all things that we need. Begining from the big forest to biggest ocean around the world. Also we have a lot of animal species that do not exist in another place around the world.
I do not know what people thing about México, but I know something.
I do not change México for nothing.
I believe that the people aren´t happy because there are a lot of problems in our world. All people in the world live with problems. However I think that the people must live with happiness or without happiness. People believe the life is very easy but it is false. The text says that there are countries with hapiness then, why the rest of the world is not happy. It is said the economical crisis, the pollution ,the misery ,drugs, violency. are consecuences in our life that's why people don't want to live here.
I think that in the most of contries, people aren't happy. Because existe much thinks that creat a negative humor as a sickness a lost economic a relative or emocional. Alson a bad goverment can provocate unhapinnes but people must be concience that anybody plus that us are responsble our happiness.
the article give us he causes of unhappiness but finally we can be happy if wehave a positive actitud in our contry or other contry.

Happiness comes from the inside, this is true. I think that in a 90% it depends on us and in the way we perceive things around us.
However, we also need to consider that our city is overcrowded, and we spend (or waste) a lot of time stocked in the traffic, and this is something that doesn't make anybody happy.
Traffic is one of the most terrible things in our city but geographicaly talking, we have a beautiful country. So, I would say that I am just happy living here.
well, I think Mexico is a nice city, really.... I know that it has a lot of pollution but, it doesn't mean that Mexico doesn't have great things and places to go to. For example I love going to the Center of the city, it has many places to visit, many expositions to go...
also Mexico is very rich in culture, I mean we have a lot of history... and we must value that, you know for example that US doesn't have history, because many other countries conquered them..... but us have so many history since ever....
so there's something that we must learn, we must love our beautiful city, with all it's failes and nice things...

One of the most important things in the life is the searching of happiness. However, almost of people in the world support it on how many possession they have. In particularly, Mexican people find their happiness when they show their new car, house, expensive clothes made by famous designers, or even to celebrity big parties.
So, it is unbelievable that in Mexico many people can be happy!!! When, there are many troubles ranging from poverty, narcotrafic, instability economic to unemployment and insecurity. Despite of these things, we enjoy having family meetings all Sundays, seeing a football soccer game, or drinking a cool beer in front of one beautiful Mexican Caribbean beach. Precisely, these little moments are pieces of happiness. It can be the reason why Mexican people consider they are very happy.
The question is: Am I really happy to live in Mexico? In fact I am, taking in count that I consider myself free to express my opinions, I have a job, a family, and even we are not in the best conditions, I agree with Hart’s opinion, that happiness consists in this case in the liberty that you have to choose everything and also tolerance.
Well, I'm a happy person and I'm very proud of being mexican for our culture, history and our backgrounds.
But nobody likes living in a country that is sinking with so much violence and murders, I don't like it. You cannot live in a constant fear every time you go out to the streets, that's not life.
It's complicated, because I would like to live in a another country but at the same time I like living in here. If I had the chance to go to another country, I would go without second thoughts.
I’m with Ronald Inglehart when he said that the richest countries are the happiest of the list, and also when he refers to the ones that have open minds. You could see this clearly specific on the last countries of the list.
In Mexico we are happier, we should be in a better place, I know that we have problems such as violence in this last months, our authorities that doesn’t do a good job, we are not save of it but we need to look for all the wonders that our country give us.

It is obvious from the data that some of the riches countries are the happiest. But there are also some other well off countries that are not as happy as the some other rich countries. For example, I see Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong with not many happiness. I think they do as good as like United States, and the European countries, but how they do with there country like economy, business and money is not the thing that make them happy. I believe they do good in that stuff, but I think they only think about money that they are not happy. Mexico is not as well off as the Asian countries, but we live better because we have a different culture that is not about money or having a well job. Of course, we like money, but we like more our families and it is more important to us.
