People in most countries around the world are happier these days, according to newly released data from the World Values Survey based at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
Data from representative national surveys conducted from 1981 to 2007 show the happiness index rose in an overwhelming majority of nations studied.
"It's a surprising finding," said U-M political scientist Ronald Inglehart, who directs the World Values Surveys and is the lead author of an article on the topic to be published in the July 2008 issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. "It's widely believed that it's almost impossible to raise an entire country's happiness level."
The 2007 wave of the surveys also provides a ranking of 97 nations containing 90 percent of the world's population. The results indicate that Denmark is the happiest nation in the world and Zimbabwe the unhappiest. The United States ranks 16th on the list, immediately after New Zealand.
During the past 26 years, the World Values Surveys have asked more than 350,000 people how happy they are, using the same two questions.
"Taking all things together, would you say you are very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not at all happy?" And, "All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days?"
Combining responses to these two questions, Inglehart and colleagues constructed an index of subjective well-being that reflects both happiness and general life satisfaction.
In the 52 countries for which a substantial time series is available (covering 17 years on average), this index rose in 40 countries and fell in only 12. The average percentage of people who said they were "very happy" increased by almost seven points.
"Most earlier research has suggested that happiness levels are stable," Inglehart said. "Important events like winning the lottery or learning you have cancer can lead to short-term changes, but in the long run most previous research suggests that people and nations are stuck on a 'hedonic treadmill.' The belief has been that no matter what happens or what we do, basic happiness levels are stable and don't really change."
The new findings from the World Values Surveys not only show that during the past 25 years, happiness has in fact risen substantially in most countries. Fully as important as the fact that happiness rose is the reason why. In recent decades, low-income countries such as India and China have experienced unprecedented rates of economic growth, dozens of medium-income countries have democratized and there has been a sharp rise of gender equality and tolerance of ethnic minorities and gays and lesbians in developed societies.
Economic growth, democratization and rising social tolerance have all contributed to rising happiness, with democratization and rising tolerance having even more impact than economic growth. All of these changes have contributed to providing people with a wider range of choice in how to live their lives---which is a key factor in happiness.
The people of rich countries tend to be happier than those of poor countries, but even controlling for economic factors, certain types of societies are much happier than others.
"The results clearly show that the happiest societies are those that allow people the freedom to choose how to live their lives," Inglehart said.
As an example, Inglehart points to the tolerant social norms and democratic political systems in Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Canada all of which rank among the 10 happiest countries in the world.
"The events of the past 25 years have brought a growing sense of freedom that seems to be even more important than economic development in contributing to rising happiness," Inglehart said. "Moreover, the most effective way to maximize happiness seems to change with rising levels of economic development. In subsistence-level societies, happiness is closely linked with in-group solidarity, religiosity and national pride. At higher levels of economic security, free choice has the largest impact on happiness."
He also notes that the largest recent increases on the subjective well-being index, measuring both happiness and life-satisfaction, occurred in the Ukraine, followed by Moldova, Slovenia, Nigeria, Turkey and Russia.
"While most ex-communist countries show low levels of happiness, many of them show large recent increases in subjective well-being," Inglehart said. "The collapse of communism was generally followed by a sharp decline in well-being, which tended to rise again with economic recovery."

Hello George,
It is obvious from the data that some of the riches countries are the happiest. But there are also some other well off countries that are not as happy as the some other rich countries. For example, I see Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong with not many happiness. I think they do as good as like United States, and the European countries, but how they do with there country like economy, business and money is not the thing that make them happy. I believe they do good in that stuff, but I think they only think about money that they are not happy. Mexico is not as well off as the Asian countries, but we live better because we have a different culture that is not about money or having a well job. Of course, we like money, but we like more our families and it is more important to us.

What is Happiness?
What makes you happy?
Happiness will be the same to all of us?
Why you wanna be happy?
After all, this is a cultural matter than apply to you if you have what it´s nedded to be mexican, or african or whatever.
Why everubody pursues happiness? This is an invention pursues what you don´t have, but want anyway.
And hapiness reduces to material belongings in USA have more and more without never been satisfied. I have a friend that always said I´m just someone if I have money, you are with me cos I got money and even it´s a sad thing that the way gringos think and their fuck off that´s why Buss was rellected in first place, anyway take it easy but don´t stop doing your thing and just be the way you are and you wiill be happy in Israel or in Australia...
Countries with Highest Levels of happiness:
1. Puerto Rico
2. México
3. Denmark
4. Columbia
5. Ireland
All people consider happiness more important to them than money, moral goodness, and even going to Heaven. The world population is, on average, less than 65 percent happy. 37 percent of the people on Forbes list of Wealthiest people in the world are less happy than the average Latin American. At any given time, one forth of other people in other countries are mildly depressed, 14 percent of the nations on Earth are less than 50 percent happy.Happiness Increase Experiments published in peer review journal have empirically demonstrated that individuals can be trained to be 25 percent happier through various training programs in from two to ten weeks. All demographic variables combined, including age, sex, income, race, and education, are responsible for only 15 percent of the difference in happiness levels between For example the American Children feel happy 52 percent of the time, neutral 29 percent of the time, and unhappy 19 percent of the time. Americans' personal income has increased more than 2 1/2 times over the last 50 years, but their happiness level has remained the same. Other example is about money Americans earning more that $10 million annually are only slightly happier than average Latin American.
In my opinion Mexico has two faces, a happy face and one sad, the happy is because our country is beautiful and interesting, also the foundation of Mexican culture is the family, but unfortunately the family and its importance is being lost which results in an increase in insecurity in the country.
Insecurity and the economy do that many people feel sad and scared of what might happen tomorrow, if the people of this country don't make of something, the unhappiness will destroy all our dreams.

I think that to be happy, the health and the family are very important, but the country where you live is important in indirect way, since if you live in a country where your finances and quality of life is better or worse than in other countries, you will be happy or unhappy depending on the place where you are, but if you don't make up your destiny and fight for the things that you want
Hi!! The most important thing in this article is how was done the research, how this people sort the conclusions out, how were done the tests and what kind of people answered them, because the results depends on economic situation, the zone where people lives and troubles inside of home; I think everyone have something to be happy, I know sometimes it’s so hard find happiness in a extremely ugly way, but maybe we could find it in somebody or in something even in each of us.
Most of the times all of us are locked for something else and don’t worth all that we have, for example if someone have a house is unhappy because doesn’t have a big garden or if someone have that big garden is unhappy because doesn’t have a pool, we could worth things that we have, in my case I’m so happy because I’m healthy, I have a lovely family that it’s all of me, I have an amazing friends and I have a job.
Sometimes I know it’s so difficult to see the light in a dark place, but we could do it and it deepens on our selves, we have to think “this is for something” and “I could learn something about this”.
I believe that every country has his own natural beauties and in our country we have of everything, beaches, mountains, cold places, warm.
Also we possess a great diversity of flora and fauna that other persons come here only to knowing them.
Our culture that also is very diverse, and very colouring, I feel proud to live in Mexico, with regard to this on that I have just commented;
On the other hand (or side) I disgust like are many Mexicans because they don´t care their contry, only they selves and their confort.
But, who don´t to vote for his own environment
One has seen in different forms the union only, in the marvels of the world and now in the flag most beautiful of the world and is winning Mexico, this way that we can feel proud of our country
And that if we want it we do more for.
THINK THIS ARTICLE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE FOR SOME COUNTRIES THAT REALLY ARE NOT HAPPY I THINK THE FORM OF LIFE THAT MAKES THE GOVERNMENT OF EVERY COUNTRY IS IMPORTANT TO GIVE YOU THE ARTICLE AS SAID THAT RICHER COUNTRIES ARE HAPPIER THAN THE POOR.
I believe that the people aren´t happy because there are a lot of problems in our world. All people in the world live with problems. However I think that the people must live with happiness or without happiness. People believe the life is very easy but it is false. The text says that there are countries with hapiness then, why the rest of the world is not happy. It is said the economical crisis, the pollution ,the misery ,drugs, violency. are consecuences in our life that's why people don't want to live here.
Hi Jorge!!
Well, this is a difficult question, i explain why, first of all, i think that mexico it is an incredible and wonderful country, we have many many beautiful places to visit like other countries or better maybe!! Mexico has big lakes, relax beach, magic towns, enigmatyc deserts, waterfalls, forest, parks, history, culture and modernity, all all we have in own country and more cheap than others, i am very happy for this, i am feel great pride for the place where i live, but for the other side we have many problems principally with the government, it is not good for almost all habitants in mexico, it is good for a few, it is the same with the salaries, insecurity is a big problem, pollution, between others, for this i am happy for one side and unhappy for other side, but not change mexico for nothing.

Hi!
I think this was a really long article!
Well, I am happy living in Mexico, I know we have a lot of bad things but the important thing we have to do is paying attention to all the good that life give us, because it would be very sad if we just keep all the bad.
I don't think that being rich means being happy, not just because a country has a good economic position that means that everyone there are happy, I know that is important because people that don't have anything to eat are not going to be happy, but in my opinion money is not the most important thing for being happy.
